Mall of Louisiana shooting, A Regular Thursday Turned Into a Nightmare at the Mall of Louisiana

April 23, 2026
It was supposed to be just another Thursday afternoon. People were grabbing lunch at the food court, doing some shopping, maybe killing time between errands. And then — gunfire.

By now you've probably seen it on your feed. A shooting broke out at the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge today, and the details are as heartbreaking as they are infuriating.

Here's what we know: at least 10 people were shot. Two of them are in critical condition right now, fighting for their lives. The chaos reportedly started when two groups got into an argument near the food court — and someone decided a gun was the answer. Shots rang out around 1:30 p.m. local time, and within minutes, what had been a normal shopping mall turned into a mass casualty scene. Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center began preparing for the worst.

The response was massive — Baton Rouge PD, the FBI, ATF, all flooding in. Police Chief TJ Morse held a press conference and asked anyone with cellphone video to come forward. Authorities believe they may be looking for two shooters, both of whom fled the scene.
Baton Rouge Mayor Sid Edwards spoke directly to whoever is responsible: "We're gonna catch you. We're not gonna have this in Baton Rouge." Strong words. I hope he means them.

Governor Jeff Landry urged people to avoid the area entirely, and honestly, that goes without saying.

What gets me every time something like this happens is the sheer randomness of it. These were people just going about their day. Nobody walks into a mall food court thinking it might be their last lunch. And yet here we are — again.

My thoughts are with everyone injured, their families, and the first responders who ran toward the danger while everyone else ran away. I'll be following this story as more details emerge.

Stay safe out there.
