Rick Derringer, Iconic Rock Guitarist and Producer, Dies at 77

Rick Derringer, the legendary guitarist, singer, and producer best known for his hits “Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo” and “Hang On Sloopy,” passed away on May 26, 2025, at the age of 77. He died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Ormond Beach, Florida, surrounded by his wife, Jenda Derringer, and close friend Tony Wilson.

While an official cause of death has not been confirmed, reports suggest that Derringer's heart gave out following a sudden medical episode. Earlier in the year, he had undergone triple bypass surgery and was reportedly recovering well.

A Prolific Career Spanning Six Decades

Born Richard Dean Zehringer on August 5, 1947, in Celina, Ohio, Derringer rose to fame at 17 with The McCoys' 1965 hit “Hang On Sloopy,” which topped the Billboard Hot 100. He later launched a successful solo career with the 1973 anthem “Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo.” Throughout his six-decade career, Derringer collaborated with numerous artists, including Johnny and Edgar Winter, Steely Dan, Alice Cooper, Cyndi Lauper, and Barbra Streisand. He also produced "Weird Al" Yankovic's debut album, earning a Grammy for his work.

In the 1980s, Derringer made a significant impact on professional wrestling by co-writing and performing “Real American,” Hulk Hogan's iconic entrance theme. The song became a cultural touchstone, later associated with political figures like Barack Obama and Donald Trump. He also contributed to other wrestling themes, including “Demolition.”

A Lasting Legacy

Derringer's influence extended beyond rock music into smooth jazz, and he toured with Ringo Starr’s All Starr Band in the 2000s. His dynamic stage presence and musical versatility left a lasting legacy in the music industry.

In 2024, Derringer released a comprehensive 50-song retrospective album titled Rick Derringer – My Double Gold Life, celebrating his extraordinary career and collaborations with his wife, Jenda.

Tributes have poured in from musicians and fans alike, mourning the loss of a prolific and energetic performer whose legacy deeply impacted the rock genre and music industry.
