Happiness for Beginners Movie Review 2023

Helen (Ellie Kemper) sits in solitude at a bustling party, engrossed in her goals for an upcoming hiking trip. The host is her brother Duncan (Alexander Koch), and she's there only to hand him her keys for house-sitting. When he's absent, she hands them to his friend Jake (Luke Grimes), who implores her to stay, sparking a reflection on her perception of fun. Helen is on a journey to rise from the ashes of her divorce, seeking a deeper connection to nature and a sense of renewal.

As the story unfolds, Duncan’s friend Jake joins the hiking trip, leading to a humorous pretense of their prior acquaintance. The Appalachian Trail, spanning Connecticut and New York, becomes the backdrop for an 81-mile expedition that mirrors life's daunting yet beautiful challenges. The predictable trajectory of the narrative is compensated by scenic visuals, evocative needle drops, and a beautiful Pablo Neruda poem.

Cinematographer Daniel Vecchione captures the picturesque New England fall colors, enhancing the film's aesthetic appeal. The characters, initially appearing one-dimensional, reveal unexpected layers, adding depth to the narrative. Shayvawn Webster brings warmth to the character Windy, and Gus Birney surprises with a revelation as Kaylee. Even Beckett, the hiking group leader, unveils a different facet.

Amidst the ensemble, Blythe Danner shines as Helen’s grandmother. However, the heart of the story is Ellie Kemper's portrayal of Helen. Kemper adds subtlety and complexity to the character, showcasing a range of emotions, especially in a poignant childhood memory monologue. Even without makeup, Kemper radiates, portraying Helen's inner journey with authenticity.

Luke Grimes, playing Jake, complements Kemper with wry humor and subtle expressions, establishing a convincing connection with Helen. While the plot may not offer groundbreaking surprises, the film's tone remains bright, occasionally making room for quieter moments. Vicky Wight, the writer/director, skillfully adapts Katherine Center's novel, maintaining a balance between inspiration and gratitude.
