Goodbye to a British Television Icon — Elsie Kelly Has Passed Away at 89 🌹

British television has lost one of its most cherished and warmly remembered faces.

Elsie Kelly, the Liverpool-born actress beloved by millions for her role as the hilarious and lovable Noreen Maltby in the long-running ITV sitcom Benidorm, passed away peacefully on April 21, 2026, at the age of 89. She passed away after a short illness, surrounded by her loving family.

The Role That Made Her a Household Name

For many fans, Elsie was Noreen. She appeared in the sitcom from the very first episode in 2007, playing the long-suffering mother of Johnny Vegas's character Geoff, otherwise known as The Oracle. She stayed with the show through its highs and lows, even returning after a brief absence — and in the final series, she pulled off something truly special. In series 10, Kelly played not just Noreen, but also Noreen's identical twin sister Doreen — a dual role that delighted fans right up until the show's cancellation.

In total, she appeared in 48 episodes — a testament to just how central she was to the heart of the show.

A Career That Spanned Five Decades

But Elsie's story began long before Benidorm. She made her television debut in 1979, appearing in the ITV soap opera Crossroads, where she portrayed cleaner and gossip Mrs Tardebigge — a role she played until the soap's cancellation in 1988.

From there, her career touched nearly every corner of British television. She appeared in The Famous Five, Harry and the Wrinklies, Skins, Coronation Street, and the acclaimed anthology series Inside No. 9. She also appeared on the big screen alongside Julie Walters in the 1996 comedy film Intimate Relations.

Off screen, she served as resident director of the Birkenhead Operatic Society Trust for an extraordinary 46 years, overseeing productions at some of Liverpool's most iconic theatres, before announcing her retirement in 2019.

The Tributes Pour In

Those who worked alongside her were quick to share their grief and their gratitude.

Benidorm creator and writer Derren Litten called her a "comedic genius," writing: "Elsie's acting abilities and comic genius were so natural they were almost taken for granted. Thanks for your talent but most of all your friendship Elsie — I am very sad today but also happy to think of such a wonderful life well lived."

Co-star Crissy Rock described her as "an absolute joy to work with" who "brought so much warmth and laughter wherever she went."

Her agent summed it up simply and perfectly — her unmistakable charm, sharp timing, and gentle humour made her a fan favourite. And they were right.

Elsie Kelly was 89 years old. She lived a full, remarkable life — on stage, on screen, and in the hearts of everyone who ever watched her make them laugh.

Rest peacefully, Elsie. Thank you for everything. 💐
